Most sore throats are caused by viruses, but strep throat is caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. Strep bacteria can live in the nose and throat, and they can infect other people through coughs and sneezes. People with strep throat commonly experience sore throats, fevers, and swollen tonsils. Strep throat is usually a mild infection, but strep bacteria can cause more serious infections in other parts of the body.
