Executive Chairman and Co-Founder
Tim Howes is executive chairman and co-founder of Know Yourself. He is a computer scientist and entrepreneur who has co-founded two technology companies in addition to Know Yourself. The first, Opsware, was bought by HP in 2007 for $1.65 billion. The second, Rockmelt, was bought by Yahoo in 2013. Tim has also served as vice president of engineering for Yahoo, chief technology officer for HP Software, vice president of technology for AOL, and chief technology officer for Netscape’s server product division. In his spare time, he is at his other full time job as chief technology officer of ClearStory Data, a leading provider of fast-cycle data intelligence for everyone.
Know Yourself is a departure from Tim’s usual technology-focused, pure for-profit ventures. Inspired by his wife Nancy’s passion to educate their daughters and spread self literacy to the world, Tim has been a supporter of and participant in Know Yourself’s mission from its beginnings in the family garage (he parks his car outside now) to its current status as a ‘real company’ with office space, employees, and everything, as he likes to say. He finds it rewarding to work at a company with a mission to do good for the world by inspiring children to know themselves.
Prior to life in Silicon Valley, Tim co-invented LDAP, the Internet directory protocol. Tim holds a bachelor of science degree in Aerospace Engineering, a master of science in Computer Science and Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, all from the University of Michigan. He has co-authored two books, numerous patents, and over 20 Internet RFCs. He has served on the board of directors of several public, private, for- and non-profit companies. He lives in California with his super beautiful, busy, and important wife, two daughters, and a menagerie of animals.
